Diablo 4 Weapon Expertise Choices for Barbarians U4GM

Is Double Swing worth rebuilding around in Diablo 4's 3.3.0 PTR, or does the larger tooltip only look convincing Its listed damage rises from 75% to 150% per swing, and Slice and Dice no longer carries its Cast Speed penalty. Those changes make a shelved melee setup worth retesting, but they do not promise equal gains across a full run. Record how your setup performs with its current Diablo IV Items before replacing anything, so gear changes do not blur what the skill adjustments contribute.

Separate Tooltip Damage From Run Performance

The 150% figure describes listed damage per swing, not a guaranteed doubling of damage over an entire dungeon or boss encounter. Total output still depends on attack frequency, damage modifiers, Fury availability, and how often you lose contact while repositioning. A stronger hit matters most when it shortens a dangerous exchange, but it cannot make up for long gaps between attacks.

To compare versions, hold difficulty, route, and the rest of the build steady. Changing gear, skill variants, and Paragon choices at once may improve the character, yet it leaves you without a clear cause for the improvement. Start with the arrangement you know, then change one factor at a time.

Set One Reliable Baseline

Record equipment, skill choices, Paragon allocation, and Weapon Expertise, then run the same activity at the same difficulty. Note clear time and missed attacks as well as damage. This takes a little setup, but an imperfect controlled run tells you more than a strong result from a test where several things changed.

Read Packs and Bosses as Separate Tests

Against enemy packs, time the full clear rather than judging the largest hit. Note whether scattered targets force long chases, whether several enemies stay in range, and how often you break off to avoid incoming damage. A fast opening with repeated downtime may not improve the whole pull.

A boss needs its own test because movement phases and a longer fight can expose Fury gaps that a quick pack hides. Track how often Fury runs low, how long recovery takes, and whether you can resume pressure after repositioning. If you cannot keep attacking safely, include that lost uptime in the result rather than treating it as a damage issue alone.

Use a short protocol so each attempt answers the same question.

Keep the same equipment, difficulty, and activity for the baseline run.
Record pack clear time and noticeable Fury interruptions.
Repeat the test after changing one skill or expertise choice.
Compare boss pressure separately, including pauses during movement phases.

Repeat runs when practical; one unusually smooth pull can distort the result. If an option performs well only when the fight cooperates, it may be a poor fit for content that forces frequent movement.

Balance Attack Rhythm With Expertise

Slice and Dice losing its Cast Speed penalty may make Double Swing feel less constrained, but a smoother rhythm is not automatically more sustainable. Compare similar combat windows and note attacks completed, pauses, and Fury recovery. If you gain a quicker sequence but spend more time waiting, count both sides of that trade instead of focusing only on extra swings.

Test Weapon Expertise On Its Own

The PTR changes the target conditions for several one-handed expertise effects. One-Handed Axe Expertise's base effect no longer requires an Injured enemy. One-Handed Mace Expertise has broader boss relevance, and its Lucky Hit effect no longer requires a stunned target. One-Handed Sword Expertise no longer requires a Crowd Controlled target for its Lucky Hit effect. These changes justify fresh comparisons, not a single winner for every build.

Swap only the relevant expertise while holding the rest of the setup steady. The axe change may simplify testing where the former Injured requirement mattered; the mace and sword changes matter when their target conditions previously failed to line up with an encounter. Judge each benefit against the option you give up, not an older ranking.

Run the controlled comparison before committing resources to replacement pieces. If Double Swing maintains pressure through packs and longer boss windows, consider whether a targeted upgrade to diablo 4 gear addresses a real weakness. If Fury downtime or unsafe positioning remains the limiting factor, adjust the setup or keep the change on hold.
